Bill Monroe Instrumental Tunes For Five String Banjo

from Lluís Gómez

Welcome and thanks for buying this book. Over the years I've been playing Bill Monroe music. I love his music. His compositions are played at every jam and his songs are well known. Maybe the most famous is Blue Moon of Kentucky, which Elvis Presley sung.
This tunes in this book are instrumentals. These are the tunes I have been playing at many jams and in recordings. A collection of his most common and popular tunes, recorded from the early 1940's to the early 1980s.
As Bill Monroe is commonly lauded as "the father of bluegrass music", his tunes are standard repertoire and should be studied and played by any person interested in bluegrass music.
My arrangements are based on the way his fiddle players played his music, people like Kenny Baker and Bobby Hicks, just to name a couple.
Over the years banjo players played his music in Scruggs style. But thanks to the melodic style and the single string a new window is open to try to play more accurate Bill Monroe music.
I didn't tab tunes like Rawhide or Bluegrass Breakdown, I think you can find different versions and great arrangements on the net.
At the end of the book you'll find Boston Boy, Soldier's Joy and Jenny Lynn, the three tunes Bill mentioned on Uncle Pen. The B part of Jenny Lynn is played at the end of Uncle Pen , so I it's important to know.
Well, let's start learning tunes from The Man, Bill Monroe! Lluís Gómez (January 2015)
